In the last years we have witnessed the development of new more sensible and more specific biomarkers and more precise imaging methods enabling detection of minimal volume of myocardial necrosis. Regarding present clinical practice, social and epidemiological aspects as well as clinical studies requirements, the need of redefinition of myocardial infarction published in the year 2000, arouse as the consensus of ESC and SCC. In 2007 a scientific consensus was achieved about criteria of diagnosis and classification of myocardial infarction. Involvement of these criteria into clinical practice is resulting in international uniformity and possibility of comparing epidemiological data. Uniform approach is bringing benefits to scientific research and thus possibility of comparing of input and output parameters among clinical studies. Epidemiological analyses and inter-annual trends of incidence of myocardial infarction will be evaluated from the aspect of increase of “small” infarctions caused by introduction of troponin into its diagnostics.
