Renal artery stenosis is the most common correctable cause of hypertension. B-mode sonography image with a color doppler and with analysis of doppler waveform parameters, in combining extrarenal and intrarenal approaches, is an ideal screening method for detection of renal artery stenosis. It can be useful as a noninvasive screening test for selected patients with suspicion of renovascular hypertension and for surveillance following renal revascularisation. It is noninvasive, relatively unexpensive diagnostic method, and can be used in patients with any degree of renal insufficiency. Doppler sonography has been steadily improved over the last years and is now frequently used as the first-line screening test for patients with suspected renal artery stenosis or with renovascular hypertension.
