Cardiovascular diseases, primarily ischemic heart disease, belong to the leading causes of the total morbidity and mortality. The most frequent clinical demonstration of the ischemic heart disease is stable angina pectoris. Its treatment includes lifestyle changes, pharmacological therapy and revascularization procedures. The aim of the pharmacological treatment is not only to influence the patient’s symptoms but also to improve his/her prognosis. This article provides the current overview of drugs used to treat stable angina pectoris and their risks. Additionally, the article deals with ivabradine – a more recent antianginous drug which has a stable position in the ischemic heart disease treatment.
