The cause of ischemic stroke in approximately 15% of cases is stenosis of the internal carotid artery. Carotid endarterectomy
(CEA) and carotid stenting (CAS) are now standard treatment for patients with severe symptomatic, and often
even asymptomatic, carotid artery stenosis. The CEA method has been used in vascular surgery for more than 50
years, the CAS method has been applied as a mini-invasive intervention technique for the last approximately 15 years.
The choice of CAS or CEA remains a subject to controversial expert discussions even after more than a decade of clinical
studies and analyses comparing these two treatment procedures. The aim of this paper is to give up-to-date information
on CAS status in the treatment of patients with extracranial carotid artery, and on the impact of experience on
the results of these procedures and their complications.
