Takotsubo syndrome (TS) is an acute reversible heart failure (HF) syndrome with a clinical presentation that mimics
an acute coronary syndrome. TS is estimated to represent 1% to 2% of patients presenting with suspected acute coronary
syndrome. TS predominantly affects post-menopausal women, and it is triggered by emotional or physical stressors
in a majority of cases. Its typical clinical presentation involves chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, transient
ST segment elevation on the electrocardiogram (ECG), and a low increase in troponin. Cardiac imaging demonstrates
wall motion abnormalities that usually extend beyond the territory of single epicardial coronary artery, and the absence
of obstructive coronary artery disease. Treatment usually leads to spontaneous recovery of left/right ventricular function
within weeks.
