Cholecystectomy is the most common elective abdominal operation and is overwhelmingly necessitated by the presence of gallstones. Cholelithiasis belongs among the most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In general, gallstones are aproximately two times more common in women than in men and at least 10 % of the general population have gallstones. Ethiopathogenesis of gallstones is multifactorial but there are some questions in their pathogenesis which remain unclear. Three principal defects mechanisms are intimately involved in cholesterol gallstone formation: cholesterol supersaturation, accelerated nucleation and gallbladder hypomotility. Pigment stones form in the gallbladder as a result of increased production of unconjugated bilirubin, which then precipitates as a calcium bilirubinate to form stones.
