Internal endoscopic biliary drainage has become the treatment of choice in inoperable malignant bile duct obstructions. Duodenobiliary drainage is indicated in benign diseases of the bile ducts, particularly in benign stenoses of the bile ducts and in bile leaks. Most benign bile duct stenoses are the result of iatrogenic injury during cholecystectomy, less frequently they are caused by chronic pancreatitis, sclerotizing cholangitis, liver injury, post liver transplant and choledocholithiasis. In the review article we discuss the value and potential of duodenobiliary drainage in the treatment of benign bile duct diseases. Further we define the indications for endoscopic treatment and alternative surgical treatment in these diseases.
