Lower gastrointestinal bleeding is approximately 20 to 33 % of all gastrointestinal haemorrhage. It is characterized as bleeding originating from a source located distal to Treitz ligament. The severity of lower gastrointestinal bleeding may vary. Bleeding can be acute or chronic. Bleeding increases with age due to the increased incidence of major bleeding causes, including diverticulosis and angiodyslplasia. This paper describes the aetiology of bleeding from the lower GIT, its speeches with a particular focus on the acute form of bleeding. It is focused on diagnostics, where a major role plays endoscopic examination methods. Bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal tract may be the first sign of serious diseases such as gastrointestinal malignancy, but it can be the symptom of benign disease.
