The authors point out prothrombotic predisposition of colorectal cancer, describe the etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestations and factors affecting thrombosis. In addition to the analysis of several studies on thromboembolic complications in cancer patients, they also report even their own study of 167 patients with colorectal cancer and evaluate the role of D dimer, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, prothrombin fragments and protein C. They present the current view on a resection of the colon and rectum using the laparoscopic surgery, the thromboembolic risks of chemotherapy, the administration of blood derivatives, the treatment options and complications of liver metastases, the risk of a new generation of anticoagulants and justify the need for prolonged antithrombotic prophylaxis.
