Acute conditions in non-specific inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) comprise a broad range of pathologies with sudden
worsening in an outpatient patient who suddenly requires urgent medical care. These conditions might be directly related
to underlying disease, i.e. to IBD outburst or origination of its complications.
In addition, acute conditions in IBD can result from side-effects of IBD-related therapy. These side-effects can be idiosyncratic,
typically represented by thiopurine-induced acute pancreatitis, or can present as infectious complications inherent
to immunosuppressive mechanism of actions of several drugs used in the treatment of IBD. The present review
deals specifically with acute complications of Crohn´s disease, such as intestinal strictures and intra-abdominal abscesses,
with emphasis on multi-disciplinary approach in the management of these conditions. Furthermore, the role of
a gastroenterologist in the preparation of IBD patients for surgery with timely therapy adjustment is emphasised with
the aim to minimalize the extent of the surgery and its possible complications.
