Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs when pancreatic digestive enzymes decrease below the level needed to maintain
normal digestion. The most frequent reason is chronic pancreatitis. However, also other pancreatic diseases or extrapancreatic
lesions might lead to exocrine insufficiency. The diagnosis is detected by clinical symptoms (steatorrhoea,
weight loss, malnutrition) and some tests. The treatment is based on dietetic precautions, change of lifestyle and
substitution of pancreatic enzymes. An inevitable precondition for successful treatment is a sufficient dose of enzymes
and its administration during the meal. Sometimes increase in dosage or addition of proton pump inhibitors is needed.
