Carcinoma of the oesophagus does not belong to a frequent tumour in the Slovak Republic. Its incidence is continually
growing here afflicting prevailingly men. Contrary to the western countries a squamocellular type of carcinoma
and adenocarcinoma is still prevailing in Slovakia. The majority of cases is diagnosed in the advanced stage,
which manifests as dysphagia and weight loss. From diagnostic methods endoscopy has its irreplaceable place, in
the frame of staging especially endosonography and computed tomography. Early lesions might be treated with endoscopic
resection or surgically. When oesophageal muscles are afflicted but without metastases the surgery is indicated,
in more advanced stages a combined and palliative treatment is used.
