Oesophageal stenting using self-expandable metal stents (SEMSs) is currently the most common tool of palliation
in malignant dysphagia. Temporary stent placement can be useful for refractory benign oesophageal strictures,
oesophageal leakage, perforations and fistula, as well as for refractory oesophageal variceal bleeding. However,
high-quality evidence comparing oesophageal stenting with other available treatment options is lacking. Furthermore,
oesophageal stenting is associated with a substantial risk of adverse events. Therefore, careful selection of
patients on an individual level is recommended. This review provides key principles and a literature update on the
utility and limitations of oesophageal stenting in benign and malignant diseases in clinical practice.
