At present, metabolic syndrome is a global health problem. In the USA approximately 20% of people suffer from this syndrome, in the Czech Republic, the numbers are almost the same. Metabolic syndrome is prevailingly associated with the risk of origination of cardiovascular diseases, but also the relation between metabolic syndrome and diseases of the pancreas, biliary system and gastrointestinal tract are frequent and significant.
Recently there is an increasing number of findings showing that metabolic syndrome not only induces a disease of the biliary tract, but the therapy of cholelithiasis with cholecystectomy might induce metabolic syndrome.
This fact is significant also from the view of long-term follow-up of patients after cholecystectomy, from the view of induction of metabolic, highly risky changes as diabetes mellitus type 2, dyslipidaemia or arterial hypertension.
