Oncological diseases are one of the most frequent causes of mortality in the developed countries of the world, worldwide
cervical carcinoma presents the fourth most frequent cause of death due to malignant tumours. Slovakia ranks
among the countries of the European Union with high overall incidence of the disease, as one of the main reasons is
non-functional screening. After diagnosing the pre-operative staging is crucial for determining the optimum therapeutical
procedure, which in developed countries is based on modern imaging methods. More attention is still focused on
the use of ultrasound in pre-operative staging concerning its low price, good availability of the examination, short time,
comparable or better accuracy in comparison with other imaging modalities, possibility to perform dynamic tests
during the examination and absence of radiation burden for a patient. In the submitted paper there is a survey of recent
work dealing with the role and importance of ultrasound in pre-operative staging of cervical carcinoma.
