SUMMARY
Fibroids are the most common benign uterine tumours and their prevalence increases
during the woman’s life. The cause of the increase in prevalence is a more accurate
diagnostic method. A large proportion of fibroids is asymptomatic, but 30-40%
of them is manifested by pelvic pain, abnormal menstrual bleeding, or symptoms
correlating with congestion of surrounding structures and organs. Fibroids pose
a certain risk for pregnancy and childbirth because they may be associated with an
increased incidence of spontaneous abortion, foetal malformation, foetal deformity,
premature birth or abdominal distension. Both pharmacological and surgical procedures
are used, and each patient should be treated individually. This review article
provides information on symptoms, diagnosis and recommended treatments for women
with the myomatous uterus, generally during pregnancy and en_delivery.
