THE IMPORTANCE OF ENDOGENOUS OXYTOCIN IN VAGINAL BIRTH AND BONDING

Oxytocin is a neurohormone which coordinates the whole spectrum of adaptations on the level of behavioural and physical functions related to childbirth and lactation, but also to social interactions and relationships in general. The oxytocin system during birth, the skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and during lactation enables to establish the relation during the mother and the child (bonding). Routine measures in maternity hospital and biomedical intervention in childbirth (surgical and pharmacological), as well as the stress stimuli, can interfere with natural regulations and make it more difficult to develop maternal adaptations, as well as adaptations of the newborn and the baby, possibly with consequences in later life and even adulthood.
